The state of Michigan offers US History instruction in grades 5, 8, and high school. In grade 5 students learn about exploration of the New World and the settlement of the 13 Colonies in America. That learning is carried forward into 8th grade, where students begin with American Revolution and the creation of the new United States of America. 8th grade ends with Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Now that students are in high school, they will continue with the chronology of US History--focusing on Late American History. Instructional units for 9th grade US History are as follows:
Unit I--Foundations of Early American History
Unit II--Industrial America
Unit III--Progressive Era
Unit IV--Crisis of Capitalism
Unit V--WWII
Unit VI--The Cold War
Unit VII--Civil Rights
Unit VIII--Turmoil at Home and Abroad
This course is taught with the MC3 Units designed by Oakland Schools and Michigan Department of Education. Students have an assigned textbook and will need a notebook to record study guide material and historical reflections. Please use the link below to access daily lesson plans and handouts.
